Die Prachtgrundkärpflinge (Nothobranchius) sind eine Gattung der Familie Nothobranchiidae. Der Name leitet sich aus den griechischen Wörtern nothos = „falsch“ und branchion = „Kiemen“ ab.^[1]

Lebensraum

Die Gattung ist in Ostafrika beheimatet. Die einzelnen Arten haben z. T. ein sehr kleines Verbreitungsgebiet, was auch an der mangelhaften systematischen Erforschung liegen könnte. Sämtliche Arten besiedeln Tümpel und Teiche in der Savanne, die sich in der Regenzeit bilden und fast immer in der Trockenzeit austrocknen. Es handelt sich um Saisonfische, die in der Natur nur eine kurze Lebenserwartung von weniger als einem Jahr haben. Unter Standardbedingungen als Labortier können verschiedene Arten deutlich älter als 12 Monate werden.^[2]

Erscheinung

Prachtgrundkärpflinge haben eine gedrungene Körperform, der Körper ist besonders bei den Männchen hoch und bullig. Die Fische werden nur 4–7 cm groß. Die Gattung umfasst außerordentlich farbenprächtige Arten.^[3]
