Bappy Chowdhury (born Bappy Kumar Saha; 6 December, 1982) is a Bangladeshi actor who works in Bengali films. He made his debut in the 2012 comedy Bhalobasar Rong.[2][3] Since then he has starred in over 45 films in leading roles.[4][5]

Early life

Chowdhury was born on December 06, 1982 in Narayanganj, Bangladesh.[1] His father Noni Gopal Saha is a businessman and social worker,[6] and mother Swapan Saha (d. 2024) was a housewife.[7] Since his childhood, Chowdhury aspired to be an actor, inspired by Salman Shah and Nayok Raz Razzak.[1]

Career

Chowdhury made his acting debut in 2013 with Bhalobasar Rong, opposite Mahiya Mahi. The film was a major financial success.[8] In the first three years of his career, he acted in 16 films, thereby breaking the record of actor Salman Shah (who did 13 films in the same timespan).[1] He earned three Freelance Rubel nominations in Best Actor category for his 2013 works: Onnorokom Bhalobasha, Prem Prem Paglaami and Tobou Bhalobashi.[9][10][11]

Two of Chowdhury's films, Lover Number One and Ajob Prem (both 2015), were remakes of Indian movies.[12] In 2016, he starred in Ami Tomar Hote Chai with Bidya Sinha Saha Mim; it was a moderate success.[13][14] The same year, he also featured in Apon Manush with Pori Moni and in One Way with Bobby.[15]

In 2017, he starred oppsoite Achol in Sultana Bibiana; although unsuccessful,[16] he ranks Sultan amongst the most memorable roles of his career.[4] Chowdhury's subsequent releases included Nayok (2018), a box office hit.[17] In 2019, he was seen in Dongiri, which fared well with the audience.[18]

Upcoming projects

In February 2022, New Age reported that Chowdhury is simultaneously working in eleven productions.[5] He will be playing the leading role in Ashraf Shishir's under-production film, 570, based on the assasination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.[19] His other upcoming films include Kustigir and Joy Bangla, both of which pair him opposite Zahara Mitu. The latter is based on Muntassir Mamoon's novel of the same name, and will be directed by Kazi Hayat.[20]
