Public Works Department of the Government of Pakistan

Pakistan Public Works Department (Urdu: محکمہَ کارہائے عامّہ پاکستان) was a Federal Department under Ministry of Housing and Works. Its headquarters is located in Islamabad, Pakistan, and sub-offices in all the major cities of the country. PWD was in operation since pre-independence days. On June 4, 2024, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif ordered the abolition of PWD owing to poor performance and widespread corruption.^[1]^[2]^[3] On July 5, Closure of Pakistan PWD officially commenced.^[4] Pakistan Infrastructure Development and Asset Management Authority will be created under a special Act to replace Pak-PWD. ^[5]

Functions of Pakistan PWD

Acquisition and development of Federal Government lands
Maintenance of all federally owned Government Building and their furnishing except those financed from Defence budget
Construction of federally financed Government Offices and residential accommodation
Management of Federal Lodges
To act as technical adviser to Federal Government in Engineering matters
