Philstar Global, operating as Philstar.com, is a Philippine news website owned by Philstar Global Corporation, a subsidiary of Hastings Holdings/Philstar Media Group under MediaQuest Holdings. The site began online in 2000 as a repository for The Philippine Star and its sister newspapers, before publishing its news articles in 2009.[1]

History

In August 2000, Philstar Global Corporation was incorporated by the Philstar Group of the Belmonte family, which was also when Philstar.com began online. While it was initially to be a portal/repository of The Philippine Star and its sister publications (Pilipino Star Ngayon, PM: Pang Masa, The Freeman, and Banat), the website began publishing its news articles independently of the newspaper itself with its editorial team.[2]

In 2022, Philstar Global among other news organizations participated in the Philippine Fact-check Incubator (PFCI) Program initiated by Internews as part of the fact-checking build-up projects.[3][2]

On December 16, 2022, The Star editorial-in-chief Ana Paminutan wrote her column entitled "Scammers", which contains a blind item about someone who misrepresents or poses as "editor-in-chief" of the newspaper itself on the website.[2] The column has been sparked on Twitter among netizens, including the editorial staff of the Philstar website. Camille Diola, editorial head of Philstar Global, responded to Pamintuan's claim in her tweet that she has never misrepresented herself under the "editorial-in-chief" label through a subject of misinformation. Some staff members of Philstar Global posted a video on YouTube clarifying the differences between the Star newspaper and Philstar online regarding independent news publishing.
