American rapper Playboi Carti is scheduled to release his upcoming third studio album sometime in 2024, through Interscope Records, AWGE and Opium. The album's title has not yet been confirmed, but several tentative titles, including Music and I Am Music have been teased at various points throughout the project's development. The album will serve as a follow-up to his second studio album Whole Lotta Red (2020). As of August 2024, I Am Music is being teased as the name of the third studio album.

Background and promotion

The first mention of a new Playboi Carti album surfaced on March 10, 2021, just three months after releasing his highly anticipated second studio album, Whole Lotta Red. Carti took to Instagram to announce the new project, saying:[1]

LeTs dr0p thiS new Album . w3 noT done [sic]. (Let's drop this new album. We not done.)

On August 23, 2021, Carti revealed the album's initial title, Narcissist, and set a release date for September 13. Although the date wasn't met.[2] Shortly after, the Narcissist Tour, later renamed the King Vamp Tour, was announced.[3] In an April 2022 interview with XXL, Carti mentioned that the album’s title had changed to Music.[4] Carti re-emerged on social media on December 25, 2022, the second anniversary of Whole Lotta Red, posting what appeared to be new cover art on Instagram and tweeting, "love all my supporters it's time," sparking rumors of an imminent release.[5] In early 2023, momentum for the album picked up. DJ Swamp Izzo suggested in a February podcast appearance that the album was nearing completion.[6] On December 7, Carti posted "I am music" to his Instagram story.[7] This was followed by another story which showed a tweet from Pharrell Williams in response to Carti's original post, with Williams writing only the word "Prepare".[8] On March 3, Carti performed at Rolling Loud California, where he debuted the unreleased track “Rockstar,” expected to be part of the new album.[9]

He continued to build anticipation with a performance at Wireless Festival on July 7, where he previewed another new song, “Pop Out”. On July 28, Carti again teased the album on Instagram after being featured on the track "Fe!n" from Travis Scott's fourth studio album Utopia, stating "New shit on the way, believe that".[10] On September 1, 2023, a potential lead single, “Killers,” leaked online.[11] This track, along with others, had been previewed during Carti’s April 2022 XXL interview.[4] During his 28th birthday party on September 13, Carti played four unreleased tracks, featuring guest appearances from Travis Scott and Lil Uzi Vert. In a November 2023 interview with German magazine Numéro Berlin, Carti was asked about the album, to which he responded:[12]

It's very important to me, because I feel like I have something to prove. I'm just excited, you know? This is my moment, this is the one for me.

The album's release seemed imminent as DJ Akademiks reported in December 2023 that the album was set for a January 2024 release, describing it as “the greatest thing you ever heard”.[13] Carti fueled excitement by posting cryptic messages on Instagram, including “I am music” and “2024,” and releasing several promotional singles exclusively on platforms like Instagram and YouTube.[14] Carti continued to tease new material throughout 2024, with previews of tracks like “All Red” and “F*** On My DJ” during his Lyrical Lemonade Summer Smash festival performance in June.[15]

Additionally, fans have speculated Antagonist, the name for the cancelled world tour with Ken Carson, Destroy Lonely, and Homixide Gang, could also be a title for the album.[18][19][20][21][22]

In an April 2022 interview with XXL, Carti revealed another title for the album, Music, and stated "that's all it is at this point".[23][4]

Since December 2023, Carti has been teasing the title I Am Music.[24][25]
