IRIS²

IRIS² (Infrastructure for Resilience, Interconnectivity and Security by Satellite) is een door de Europese Unie geplande multi-orbit constellatie van internet satellieten.[1][2][3][4]

Geschiedenis

Het project werd voor het eerst aangekondigd door de Raad van de EU in november 2022.[1] Er wordt verwacht dat een enkel multinationaal industrieel consortium, bestaande uit onder meer Airbus Defence and Space, Thales Alenia Space en Arianespace, het zal uitvoeren.[5][6] Het is de bedoeling dat het constellatieproject wordt gelanceerd door Europese raketten, zoals de Ariane 6. In geval van problemen kunnen buitenlandse contractanten, met name SpaceX, in overweging worden genomen.
